Qual Methods (671/689): Cross-disciplinary Qualitative Methods for Investigating Wicked Problems
This interdisciplinary graduate course is designed for students across the university who seek to rigorously investigate complex, real-world βwickedβ problems. The course emphasizes both the foundations and applied practice of qualitative data analysis using approaches from both social and behavioral sciences and data science and analytics. Co-taught by faculty in Mathematics and Statistics and Political Science and Criminal Justice, students will engage in a rich, cross-disciplinary learning experience that stretches their minds and professional skillsets. Key skill development centers on data organization, systematic coding, theme development, and clear qualitative writing. Students also gain experience with hands-on coding and computational workflows in R, while critically considering and practicing responsible engagement with qualitative data, data privacy and protections, and research ethics.
