Qual Methods (671/689): Cross-disciplinary Qualitative Methods for Investigating Wicked Problems
This interdisciplinary graduate course is designed for students of any discipline who seek to rigorously investigate complex, real-world βwickedβ problems. The course emphasizes both the foundations and applied practice of qualitative data analysis using approaches from both social and behavioral sciences and data science and analytics. Co-taught by faculty in Mathematics and Statistics and Political Science and Criminal Justice, students will engage in a rich, cross-disciplinary learning experience that stretches their minds and professional skillsets. Key skill development centers on data organization, systematic coding, theme development, clear qualitative writing, program/policy recommendations, and the practice of doing public scholarship. Students gain experience with hands-on coding and computational workflows in R, while critically considering and practicing responsible engagement with qualitative data, data privacy and protections, and research ethics.
